Apples to Oregon

I'm a LOT disorganized this week, but I'm trying...I'm trying!!

We are reading "Apples to Oregon" with E-5 and G-8 and have some grand plans <---trying to convince myself there. I will mostly be using the study on Homeschool Share (thank you so much Homeschoolshare.com you make my life so much easier, especially when I am not fully awake!) unless otherwise noted every single idea/worksheet is taken straight from HSS!!! Follow the above link and it will take you straight to their Apples to Oregon page!

Social Studies/Geography:
Follow the map along the Oregon trail, note the families stops along the way.
Where is Oregon?!
Discuss the Oregon flag (symbolism)
Discuss Tall Tales

History:

View a covered wagon
BUILD a covered wagon

Language Arts
What is hyperbole?
What is personification?
Read the story of the little red house with no doors or windows and a star inside

Applied Math:
Fractions using apples
The great apple taste test (from a lesson last year!) (Graphing)
Apple dot to dot (K)

Photobucket
Art:
Apple prints

Science:
Keep track of the weather each day. Compare it to the forecast. What are forecasters called? How do they determine the weather? Study about how to become a meteorologist. Be a meteorologist (that's hard to type!) for a day. Plan what you have to say, dress appropriately and smile for the camera!! (Note the video attached. There was a better "wind" demonstration in a previous take, but this was our favorite "rain" demo! LOL)

Cooking: Make quick apple pies

Are you using any sort of formal math or reading program for your 5 year old(or the others)? Just curious to see what others do when doing the unit study thing. I really enjoy your blog and think that I would love to be your friend!

Hi Shannon, thanks for the compliment, it made my evening.

We do use formal math and reading programs.

Typically for K we stick with pretty basic math idea, learn to count to 100, skip count, months, days, etc. But once we graduate to first grade we use Singapore Math until 7th grade, when we begin to use Saxon.

For reading we use SSRW for the little guys and then rely on Unit studies for most language arts once they are good readers.

Oh my gosh! That was so funny! We are gearing up for Apples to Oregon and Johnny Appleseed soon.

It's so fun to see families actually using the units/lapbooks at HSS. :-)

Thanks for posting (especially the video!)!
